WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

One core memory etched in my mind from a little girl is the evening my mother brought me home a whole basin worth of art supplies. I don't know what in particular indicated to her that I was going to be a creative, but I'm grateful that she got the message loud and clear. In that basin I found crayons, colouring books, paint , a glue gun, popsicle sticks  - you name it. It was everything a little artist like me could dream of! As the years went on, I gravitated towards coloured pencils and drawing photorealistic faces, so much so that my art teachers insisted that I participate in the NCF's NIFCA Fine Arts Exhibition. By age 14,  I had been awarded multiple Gold Medals and was also nominated for the Prime Minister's Incentive Award for my photorealistic coloured pencil rendition of super star Rihanna. It was also around this time that I was approached and asked to do my first portrait commission of a newly-wed couple. My fascination with colour and coloured pencils only grew from there, in fact, I think that's where 'The Colourist' was born!

EMBRACING NEW CHALLENGES

Beyond portraiture, I recently found myself deeply drawn to the vast beauty of the Barbadian landscape which I have challenged myself to explore and interpret, but for the first time, with acrylic paint. That's right - up until 2021, all of my work was done exclusively with coloured pencils! I was in for a surprise though - mixing colours with paints from scratch wasn't as easy as grabbing a ready made colour from the crayon box. It was through trial and error that I grew to understand better how colours worked and now I often like to emphasize them in many of the landscapes I depict. Within these landscapes, I find trees in particular to be profoundly fascinating and I aim to showcase their character and significance in my work. My art style is an ever evolving fusion of abstraction and realism, where I weave together loose expressive brushwork and radical colours to enhance their narrative.

A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE

Today, I am passionate about using paint as a medium to tell stories. My art is an expression of my enthusiasm, a window into the world as I perceive it, and a testament to the boundless possibilities that exist when a little girl finds a basin full of art supplies.

As I continue to evolve as an artist, I look forward to exploring new avenues, pushing the boundaries of my creativity, and inviting others to join me on this captivating visual journey through the heart of my art!

My Inspiration

In the spirit of adventure..and in awe of nature

When ever I immerse myself in the natural environment of Barbados, I find endless inspiration. Whether it be the ocean, the trees, the foliage, or just the entire ecosystem rather, there seems to be endless stories to be told and colours to be seen and I'm often enchanted by the brilliance of it all. Particularly though, I'm captivated by trees and that's why they are most often the subject in my art. To me, each tree is a unique character in the narrative of the landscape, and I delight in bringing out their individuality and personality through my work.

My art style  is the result of my endeavour to portray the Barbadian landscape in a fresh captivating way. My creations are a fusion of two seemingly contrasting approaches: blending the freedom of abstract expression with the precision and lifelike quality of realism. This allows me to play with perception and emotion where my paintings are not mere reproductions of the landscape but an interpretation of the experience of the landscape. Ultimately, as an artist, I strive to transport the viewer into a world where the essence of the Barbadian landscape is distilled into a vivid, almost surreal depiction where reality and imagination intertwine. The result is a unique visual language that speaks to the heart of anyone who has felt the warmth of the sun on their skin, the whisper of the wind through the trees, and the sheer awe of nature's wonders.

Through my art, I hope to instill a sense of appreciation and respect for the natural world and I wish to awaken the viewer's senses to the intricate beauty that surrounds us and by extension, inspire them to take an active role in preserving our precious environment. Together, let us celebrate the Barbadian landscape and embrace the timeless allure of nature in all its glory!

Below are some photos I took from my adventures throughout Barbados.
